As Chairman for the Region I need to inform all clubs of a new directive from British Fencing.
With immediate effect any Fencing Club is required to run with a minimum of:
The Welfare Officer role may be new to many, primarily it is to ensure the safeguarding of children and vulnerable young people whilst in our care at a Fencing Club.
Anyone with a safeguarding concern should be able to approach the Welfare Officer at their Club.
However, the Welfare Officer Role is not necessarily onerous. At the Club level the Welfare Officer should initially make a written note of the details of any disclosure, and then seek further advice from British Fencing.
It is recommended that, if possible, both a male and a female Welfare Officer should be appointed at any Club.
We need as many people as possible to be aware of this, so please make sure that your club knows!!
It is appreciated that safeguarding issues may not be well understood, and that few Fencing Clubs in the Region will have Welfare Officers in post.
For this reason we are holding a FREE training and support session to explain all aspects of the Welfare Officer Post (We are just asking for a nominal amount towards the refreshments to be provided at the venue).
We would urge as MANY as possible to attend, to gain valuable insight into this new initiative.

The new Club Welfare Pack went live in September and to support this work we are encouraging all clubs to put a Welfare Officer in place. If you are unsure what the roles and responsibilities of a Welfare Officer are, a new training programme will be launched in January 2014 and delivered locally through the Regional Hub Network.
