John Whitworth, long time coach at Trafford Sword Club has died. His funeral will be on 9th February at 2.30pm at Altrincham Crematorium.

John wanted everyone to gather afterwards at the pub for a ‘pie and a pint’ (of course) so Ronnette has arranged a ‘wake’ at the Quarry Bank, Bloomsbury Lane, Timperley – the entrance to the pub car park is on Grove Lane.

If you can please come and join the honour guard, Gill Prideaux and Penny Needham will be bringing along some extra swords just in case. Please meet at the Crematorium about 2.15.

John, being John, wanted to go to his funeral in a Fencing bag (and why not) apparently that is not possible so Ronnette and Family have organised a cardboard coffin and she would like everyone to send her stickers, photos, poems in fact anything that reminds you of John. These will be put on the coffin and his fencing bag put on top. He has also requested that he travels in the back of his Son-in-Law’s van so there will be no hearse!

Final request from John …. Don’t wear black … He didn’t want a lot of crows at his funeral !!!

John was a true individual and you only have the pleasure of meeting one just once or twice through your life – so let’s go and celebrate the life of a unique man.

Address to send the items for the coffin to;

Mrs. R. Whitworth, 39 Perry Road, Timperley, Cheshire WA15 7SX

The final NWJS of the year was at the newly opened Manchester Fencing Centre. This was the first tournament run at the centre but undoubtedly won't be the last.

Given that the Manchester Cadet is one of the primary tournaments in the region it is nice to get some positive publicity in the media, something we could do with more of.

David Kirby has informed me that they will be running coaching master classes at KES in Stratford on May 26th and 27th and on the 13th June. The sessions are driven by the needs of coaches, but some of the things that they may cover include:

  • Weapon and blade skills for demonstrations and individual lessons, including using scientific research to directly enhance a fencing lesson;
  • Piste-side coaching and what to do in the break;
  • Planning and recording for, of and from training and competition.

He notes

Please do note that the training is off-syllabus for BF Level 2 (or BAF) coach education, however it will be highly beneficial for your person coaching efficacy. You should leave a better coach. What we do is expected to fit in with the new concepts BF are working towards and are intended to be a good start for the upcoming BF Levels 3 and 4 into the future.

If you are interested in attending (and I would recommend you do if you want to improve your coaching) then you should contact either This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. directly. The cost of the sessions is £20 per day.

After nearly ten years at West Hill School in Stalybridge Manchester Fencing Club will be moving on the 19th February. They will be sharing premises with Marshall Fencing Club at the sports hall of the Collective Spirit School, Butterworth Lane, Oldham OL9 8DX.

Coaches Steve Glaister and Colin Walls will be moving with the club providing continuity for the foilists and épéeists from Manchester and additional coaching to those from Marshall who wish to take advantage of them.

The move will allow Manchester to operate three nights a week instead of a single  session.

Both clubs share a similar outlook, being open and encouraging visitors from other clubs to come along and fence with the aim of improving the sport in the region, not just Manchester and Marshall.

This year the Sainsbury School Games are being run in Manchester. The company that is running the games, Great Big Events, is looking for volunteers to help with the event, which runs from the 4th to the 7th September. If you fancy being a presentation or floor manager, an announcer or presenter then contact Rebecca Hobbs, whose phone number and email address are given on the attached recruitment ad. Training will be given, so don't worry that you only have limited experience.

This is a great opportunity to get involved with athletes of the future. Having been a volunteer for both the Olympics and Paralympics I can testify that you will have a great time!

Have a look at the attachments then get volunteering!

As some of you may have seen there was a "pop up fencing" session at Waterloo station in London which garnered a lot of interest.

Would there be any interest in running a similar event here in the UK, possibly in one of the larger shopping malls such as the Arndale or Trafford Centres in Manchester?

Rivington Park ran such a session in Bolton but a North-West event (or more than one event) could promote both the sport and all the clubs within the region.

Add a comment to this article or write to the committee if you or your club would be interested in taking part in such an event.

Sorry for the delay on these.

Because I didn't run the DT for Chester I didn't get the results in the usual format. As a consequence of this it has taken me a little time to produce the results. However they are now available.
